Medical Billing/Health Claims Examining Program

Program Objectives
The health industry, and the related insurance industry, has an ever increasing need for trained individuals in the areas of Medical Billing and Health Claims Examining.

Medical billers/coders play an important role in the documentation, confidentiality, and retrieval of health information, which is utilized by physicians, hospitals, federal and state government agencies, and insurance companies. Medical billers/coders are responsible for the accurate coding, completion and submission of various insurance claims forms, generating patient statements and office accounting reports. Proper medical billing practices and following HIPPA compliance guidelines will result in greater reimbursements for the physicians or providers of service.

The Medical Billing/Coding Program is divided into 5 – 125 hour classroom and computer lab instruction modules and a 125- hour externship program. Students are trained in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, office procedures, bookkeeping methods, medical claim theory and practical applications, diagnostic and procedure coding, and computerized simulated office practices.

Upon satisfactory completion of the training, students will qualified to assume entry-level position as medical billers/coders performing the procedures outlined above.

Graduates of the program will receive a certificate upon completion.

Career Opportunities
The health industry and the related insurance industry are among the fastest growing opportunities for employment. Medical Billers/Coders may be employed in doctor's offices, hospitals, clinics medical billing/clearing houses and insurance companies.

Program Length
The daytime program is 29 weeks, 5 days per week, 5 hours per day. The evening program is 38 weeks, 4 nights per week, 4.5 hours per night. Holidays and summer breaks will lengthen the completion time. See the School Calendar for start and completion times.
